Summary

An Indie Bestseller!
An Indie Next Pick!
A Gold Nautilus Book Award Winner!

Some people are extraordinary。 Some are just extra。 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author TJ Klune's YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves。

Nick Bell? Not extraordinary。 But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?

After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary。 And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life)。

Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer's Renegades in TJ Klune's YA debut。

TJ Klune has done it again。 I have yet to read a book of his I don't love。 Hilarious, heartwarming and just plain entertaining!-Hilarious as in literally laughing out loud and have to stop to regroup。-Heartwarming as in I got all choked up and had to actively resist tears-Entertaining as in if I wasn't buddy reading I would have read it in a day。 Bonus that Jessica and I were having all sorts of theories。Not to mention my completely undignified pterodactyl screeching throughout。 (Everyone knows TJ Klune has done it again。 I have yet to read a book of his I don't love。 Hilarious, heartwarming and just plain entertaining!-Hilarious as in literally laughing out loud and have to stop to regroup。-Heartwarming as in I got all choked up and had to actively resist tears-Entertaining as in if I wasn't buddy reading I would have read it in a day。 Bonus that Jessica and I were having all sorts of theories。Not to mention my completely undignified pterodactyl screeching throughout。 (Everyone knows it's good if it causes pterodactyl screeching。)I love Nick。 And Seth。 And Seth's aunt and Uncle。 And Gibby。 And Jazz。 And Nick's dad。 And Officer Rookie。 (Side note: who wants an Officer Rookie spin off? I'm aware that this is a YA novel and so I'm rating it as I would have when I was in high school。 That being said, younger me would have loved this book。 Nick, Seth, Gibby and Jazz are the group of friends that support you and call you out all while making you laugh。 It is diverse and has a unique point of view because Nick, the main protagonist, has ADHD and is gay。 All of these elements add up to some hilarious dialogue and antics。 If you're a young adult looking for a funny, superhero, LGBTQ+ I'm aware that this is a YA novel and so I'm rating it as I would have when I was in high school。 That being said, younger me would have loved this book。 Nick, Seth, Gibby and Jazz are the group of friends that support you and call you out all while making you laugh。 It is diverse and has a unique point of view because Nick, the main protagonist, has ADHD and is gay。 All of these elements add up to some hilarious dialogue and antics。 If you're a young adult looking for a funny, superhero, LGBTQ+, fandom book then this is THE book。 。。。more

The Extraordinaries is about a gay, ADHD teenager who’s mildly obsessed with the Extraordinaries - superheroes walking among them but somewhat secret。 Nick decides he wants to be Extraordinary as well, but it’s not exactly easy to just decide one day that you will be。This is a super cute LGBT romance/sort of coming of age? Really more of a 4。5。 The dialogue in this book is so funny and I loved the main and supporting cast of characters。 I know there is some controversy with the police representation in this book, however, that was not an issue for as I don't believe it took away from the main story and really if anything gave us a plausible reason for why Nicky and Aaron were so attached with Nicky being so protective。 However, I do think the pacing is off as we could have done this whole book in at lest 50-80 les Really more of a 4。5。 The dialogue in this book is so funny and I loved the main and supporting cast of characters。 I know there is some controversy with the police representation in this book, however, that was not an issue for as I don't believe it took away from the main story and really if anything gave us a plausible reason for why Nicky and Aaron were so attached with Nicky being so protective。 However, I do think the pacing is off as we could have done this whole book in at lest 50-80 less pages。 You could argue there was dialogue and character moments that help us enjoy and understand Nicky, but also it made Nicky a bit frustrating at times b/c we were waiting for him to develop and thus putting up with his antics。 。。。more

I’ve enjoyed Kline’s writing in the past so I knew I would like this one too, but I didn’t expect to love it so much。 🥰 While more than mildly predictable, it didn’t bother me since everything else about it was just too damn precious。 Nicky, oh Nicky。 I can see how a scatterbrained kid with ADHD would’ve annoyed the hell out of me if I had been in HS with him。 But sitting here reading I couldn’t help but fall in love with just how endearingly earnest he was。 His adolescent crushes, and resulting I’ve enjoyed Kline’s writing in the past so I knew I would like this one too, but I didn’t expect to love it so much。 🥰 While more than mildly predictable, it didn’t bother me since everything else about it was just too damn precious。 Nicky, oh Nicky。 I can see how a scatterbrained kid with ADHD would’ve annoyed the hell out of me if I had been in HS with him。 But sitting here reading I couldn’t help but fall in love with just how endearingly earnest he was。 His adolescent crushes, and resulting motivations were familiar in a way we can all relate to。 Owen and Seth, the objects of his oscillating affections, were vivid and relatable…even when they weren’t。 And oh Seth and his bow ties *sigh*。 Damn if I’m not a sucker for his gentle nerdiness too。 While this didn’t end on a cliffhanger exactly, since you’d totally be able to read it as a standalone if you wanted, there were clear signs that this is set to wildly continue。 Can’t wait!!! 。。。more

I am absolutely freaking OBSESSED of this book!!! When I read the annotation, I didn't even think for a moment that I would like the book so much。 Even when I started the book, I had slightly lower expectations, because at first glance for every fan of movies, series and comics with superheroes, the plot seemed predictable。 The main character here is Nick, usually a 16-year-old boy who lives in a city where every day the hero Shadow Star (and Nick's biggest crush) confronts the villain Pyro Stor I am absolutely freaking OBSESSED of this book!!! TJ Klune is a delightful writer and this was not as good as his writing made me hope for。 It took a few chapters to get into and understand what was happening and sort out the players and stakes (I knew from another of his books that he might take a minute to Get There) but even I figured out what was going on, I kept wanting it to be… more? This fell pretty flat for me。

Rating: 4。5 StarsI would not call myself a lover of comics and superheroes。 I generally zone out during the fighting scenes, and I'm much more interested in their origin stories and the plot of these movies。 So when I saw T。J。 Klune (author of The House in the Cerulean Sea) had a YA superhero book, I figured I would give it a shot。 And man。。。 this book surprised me by a long shot。I will admit that Nick Bell is。。。 very annoying。 I mean, he's a teenage boy, he has a serious case of ADHD, and he is Rating: 4。5 StarsI would not call myself a lover of comics and superheroes。 I generally zone out during the fighting scenes, and I'm much more interested in their origin stories and the plot of these movies。 So when I saw T。J。 Klune (author of The House in the Cerulean Sea) had a YA superhero book, I figured I would give it a shot。 And man。。。 this book surprised me by a long shot。I will admit that Nick Bell is。。。 very annoying。 I mean, he's a teenage boy, he has a serious case of ADHD, and he is generally oblivious to everything going on around him。 But once I started seeing his inability to read the room as a plot device, I was hooked。 And surprised。。。 although I had guessed how the book would end (again, many, many clues), there were still enough surprises in there to keep me hooked。 I also LOVED Nick's friend group。 Queer and affectionate and snarky。。。 everything I love in a YA novel's group of friends。 I will definitely be reading the sequel of this novel。。。 the book doesn't really end on a cliffhanger, but the epilogue was enticing enough for me to want to continue on。Who Should Read It: Anyone who likes superhero shows (especially The Flash, with a nerdy but lovable main character)。 Anyone who is a fan of teenage snark。 Anyone who likes coming-of-age stories。 。。。more

This was cute。 The audiobook had a good narrator and I found myself chuckling at some of the sarcastic lines, so I think that speaks to some good delivery。I'm not usually into superhero stories but I wanted to give this one a shot since I recently read Klune's House on the Cerulean Sea and enjoyed it。 To me, this book had much more of a plot than Cerulean Sea, but it's a plot that's been recycled before (but。。。 that's just most superhero stories in general, which is why I don't typically read th This was cute。 The audiobook had a good narrator and I found myself chuckling at some of the sarcastic lines, so I think that speaks to some good delivery。I'm not usually into superhero stories but I wanted to give this one a shot since I recently read Klune's House on the Cerulean Sea and enjoyed it。 To me, this book had much more of a plot than Cerulean Sea, but it's a plot that's been recycled before (but。。。 that's just most superhero stories in general, which is why I don't typically read them)。 That being said, I found the characters in here really likable and I loved the relationship between Nick & his dad。 It's refreshing to read a YA book where the parents aren't completely absent and there's actually a loving relationship between parent and child。I also loved Jazz。 I need a book fully dedicated to Jazz。 。。。more

I had such high hopes for this book because I loved Cerulean Sea, but it unfortunately did not live up。 The main character (Nick) & his friend group are sweet, but this story is FILLED with copaganda。 The main character’s dad is a cop and the story reads like an ode to the police force。 They even make dismissive jokes about police brutality at one point。 As much as I loved Nick’s best friend, Seth, and his cute bow ties, I will not be recommending this book to anyone。

I laughed out loud throughout this delightful and beautifully written, fun novel。 It deals with deep themes of trauma and loss, and has a fantastic and believable quirky friend group。 I do so enjoy those。The spoofy opener was terrific。I wanted to give this a 5 but the ending fell flat for me, sliding into flat-characters-comic book land。 Sorry about that。 Enjoy the read! The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune is a quirky, queer superhero love story。 I had this book recommended by so many fellow bookstagrammers that I absolutely had to pick it up。 After reading Wolfsong and The House in the Cerulean Sea, I went into this with high expectations and I was not disappointed。 Our main character, Nick Bell, is the biggest fan of Nova City's resident "Extraordinary" Shadow Star。 When he's not writing the top-rated fanfic in the Shadow Star Fandom, he's dealing with all the com The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune is a quirky, queer superhero love story。 I had this book recommended by so many fellow bookstagrammers that I absolutely had to pick it up。 After reading Wolfsong and The House in the Cerulean Sea, I went into this with high expectations and I was not disappointed。 Our main character, Nick Bell, is the biggest fan of Nova City's resident "Extraordinary" Shadow Star。 When he's not writing the top-rated fanfic in the Shadow Star Fandom, he's dealing with all the complexities of his ADHD brain and the strain in his relationship with his father following the death of his mother。 We have the best friend Seth who is precious and must be protected at all costs (and also very obviously in love with Nick)。 To round out the main cast of characters, we have their female best friends Jasmine “Jazz” Kensington and Lola “Gibby” Gibson。 The characters were a highlight of the book。 There is Nick’s dad Aaron, who is a police officer and struggles to interact with his son at times following the death of his wife。 He’s not an absent parent by any means though, he does his best to be there for his son in every way possible despite working (i。e。 after Nick comes out, he demonstrates how to put a condom on using a banana as a demonstration much to Nick’s horror)。 We have Nick, who has the best lines in the book and is completely clueless about how much Seth cares about him。 There’s also the whole cast of supporting characters in the book, who really show up after one of the main characters is injured and lands in the hospital。 There’s nothing I can really critique with the characters in this book because everything was as close to perfection as humanly possible。 Michael Lesley is going to be one of my new favorite audiobook narrators ever。 He has a very upbeat and humorous style when he reads。 Between his narration and TJ's witty writing style, I found myself laughing a lot while reading。 While I can’t comment on the gay rep in this book due to not belonging to that community, I can comment on the ADHD representation (having the condition myself) and it was spot on。 Lesley did such a great job narrating Nick’s inner rambles and monologues。 I really related to it, and all the moments that referenced Nick’s ADHD felt very natural (and not like it was thrown in to hit some type of “diversity” quota)。 If you've read Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea and Green Creek series before, you should expect a very different vibe from The Extraordinaries。 It’s a very lighthearted and humorous read, but it also addresses some heavy and serious stuff (i。e。 parental death)。 I highly recommend this book to any young adult fans of the superhero genre。 There are no intimate sex scenes, but there are some descriptive makeout moments and the main character does have some slightly sexual tones to his inner monologues while fantasizing about his crush。 。。。more
